The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked public and policymaker interest in how best to responsibly embrace—and regulate—pathbreaking technologies. AI is poised to fuel innovation and economic growth while potentially compromising equity, privacy, and security. As voters prepare for the 2024 elections, they will need to be cognizant of the risks posed by the use of AI by domestic and international actors in generating misinformation. At the same time, voters will want to understand AI’s impact on jobs, the demand for future skills and occupations, and the challenges posed by military applications of AI. For the United States and nations around the world, the defining challenge of the coming years will be governing AI and emerging technology in line with democratic norms and economic and security values.
